Firetti Contemporary is thrilled participate at Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2023 under the 'Special Projects' section.

 

Resonance brings together three accomplished artists - Laura Lappi, Jason Middlebrook, and Collin Sekajugo - each exploring the theme of sustainability in their artistic practices. Through their diverse approaches, these artists engage with the concept of sustainability, highlighting the importance of responsible resource usage, environmental consciousness, and the potential for art to inspire positive change.

 

Laura Lappi delves into the influence of architecture and spatial environments on our perceptions and the fluid boundaries between reality and fiction in her sculptural practice. Through her use of charred wood, Lappi not only lends structural integrity to her works but also encapsulates themes of time, loss, and remembrance. Her art prompts viewers to reflect on historical memories, decay, and emotions such as loneliness and yearning, forging a deeper connection to our surroundings and emphasizing the imperative need for preservation.

 

Jason Middlebrook combines natural forms and found objects, focusing on repurposing materials. By incorporating wood sourced from his immediate environment, Middlebrook demonstrates his commitment to sustainability. His abstract forms and geometric compositions pay homage to artistic influences while evoking a sense of harmony between human creativity and the inherent beauty of nature. Middlebrook's works serve as a visual reminder of the potential for art to promote environmental awareness and responsible resource management.

 

Collin Sekajugo's artistic practice reflects his commitment to community engagement and social issues. Through mixed-media artworks, Sekajugo explores social, cultural, economic, and political identities. His use of recycled materials symbolizes the need for sustainable practices and prompts conversations about durability and environmental responsibility. Sekajugo's collages invite viewers to consider their own relationship with consumerism and inspire a more conscious approach to resource usage, challenging stereotypes and clichés about art production in Africa.
